Tisdall Associates is a Registered Practice of the Landscape Institute. The Practice brings experience offering useful insight and liaison skills for both local authority and private clients. Managing Director, Richard Tisdall brings over 20 years in Landscape Design and Management, as well as a Masters In Public Health. We provide landscape design and environmental consultancy services on a wide range of projects and scales.

Through its experience in Public Health, Tisdall Associates are able to bring together the components of the landscape which have been demonstrated through research to benefit health and well being. Unlike many other Landscape Architects, we can draw on qualifications and experience in Public Health, developing schemes which are sustainable in terms of landscape and the environment, but which also embrace Social Sustainability in terms of Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing; an increasingly important consideration as costs of ill health escalate, and those looking for new homes become increasingly aware of the need to live in health promoting environments.

DELIVERING PARKS AS HEALTH ASSETS

“IT IS POSSIBLE TO KNOW THE COST OF EVERYTHING, BUT THE VALUE OF NOTHING”

Parks and Open Spaces can be seen as a cost, or valued for their contribution to the health and wellbeing of society. Primary research has demonstrated that the quality of the built environment, and the surrounding natural landscape can have a positive bearing upon the health and well being of local communities.

It has been estimated that in the UK Parks, Open Spaces and the Natural Environment save the NHS around £111 million per year based solely on a reduction in GP visits. Aggregated across the UK an estimated £34.2 billion worth of wellbeing benefits per year are delivered by frequent use of parks and green spaces. (Fields in Trust: Revaluing Parks and Green Spaces 2018).

THE PARKS FOR HEALTH ASSESSMENT

Parks and Green Spaces can be places for Fun, Activity, Relaxation, Growing Things, Getting Together, and so much more; all important contributors the health of the local community. The Parks for Health Assessment is an Online Survey, this allows you to undertake a Free Audit of your Park, showing its Current Health Status, and potential for improvement. It can also be used to identify health promoting landscape elements and community initiatives, listing improvements and potential new interventions to enhance Parks and Green Spaces for health and wellbeing.

WHO HAS AN INTEREST IN THE PARKS FOR HEALTH ASSESSMENT?

Councils: To develop Park and Green Space Health Strategies, supporting Public Health and reducing Adult and Social Care costs.

LIAISON AND ADVICE

Integrated working with Local Government Departments, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Social Prescribers, Charities and Local Community Groups, Developers and Housing Associations, is an important part of delivering health promoting environments. We can help develop Park centred Health Strategies to deliver integrated health promotion initiatives within the local community.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

The participation of the local community in the creation of health promoting Parks and Open Spaces is an important factor in their success. The engagement of the community through the assessment, planning, design, implementation and future maintenance can provide a sense of ownership, strengthen social cohesion, and provide that community with a sense of ownership. By working alongside the local community, we can help deliver identified health benefits on the ground.
