Wild flowers are vitally important to pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies and hoverflies. A wildflower meadow is a great way to help encourage biodiversity in the garden. It will attract such creatures as moths, frogs, small mammals, insects and birds.
Meadowmat is a quick and easy way to establish a wild flower meadow in the garden. It’s more reliable than seeding and by following our guidelines for installation and maintenance you can be sure of good results.
A carefully chosen mixture of British wild flowers are grown on to a thin layer of growing medium that is supported by a lightweight net. Meadowmat is delivered to you with around 75% coverage of plants that will soon grow to give a dense sward; all you need to do is install it on to prepared ground, water it until it puts its roots down and then let it “do its own thing”. Maintenance is simple. If you’re Meadowmat is installed on to low nutrient soil, it will only need cutting once or twice a year.

Meadowmat can be installed at any time of year, provided the ground is not flooded or frozen. Our growing system means the plants roots are not damaged during harvesting Meadowmat which means that it will establish quickly into almost any situation…although we do recommend installing onto impoverished soil in a sunny spot.

What is MeadowMat?
- Meadowmat is a landscaping product that takes all of the stress, worry and waiting out of establishing a wild flower meadow.

- Rolls are typically either 1 metre wide by 2 metres long or 1metre wide by 1metre long.
- Minimum order is 2 square metres.
- Meadowmat is normally delivered within 3 working days of an order being placed. Collection from our farm can also be arranged.
Types of Meadowmat:
There are two types of Meadowmat to suit different tastes and needs. We can also grow bespoke wild flower mats, although there is a minimum order of 500 square metres for this service.
Traditional Meadowmat
Traditional Meadowmat is a mixture of 34 species of native grasses and flowering plants. All of which, (apart from Yellow Rattle) are perennial. In other words, the plants keep coming back year after year. This seed mix contains 50% grasses and 50% flowering plants. Traditional Meadowmat resembles an old fashioned species-rich meadow. 98% of this type of meadow has been lost since the second world war. These meadows provide invaluable habitat for all sorts of creatures – bees, butterflies, caterpillars, birds, small mammals and anything that relies on these for their survival. The plants in Traditional Meadowmat have been chosen because they either:
- Provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other pollinating insects
- Are food plants for caterpillars – thus helping butterfly species to survive
- Create great ground cover for amphibians and small mammals to hide in
- Are simply beautiful
- Adapt to most soil types
Traditional Meadowmat is suitable for orchards, parks, low maintenance gardens, slopes and terraces where the soil is free-draining and the aspect is sunny.
Maintenance is simple; allow Traditional Meadowmat to grow unchecked through spring and summer, cut down in late summer and then mow through the autumn and winter months. > more about meadow maintenance
Meadowmat for Birds and Bees
Seedmix contains 20% wild grasses and 80% wild flowers. Flowering species are nearly all perennial but some are biannual. In other words, some of the plants grow back every year, others flower in their second year, drop seeds into the matting and then die off. These plants have been chosen because they are either:
- Rich in pollen and nectar to support bees
- Provide bees with food in early spring and in late autumn when pollen and nectar are in short supply
- Have architectural seed heads that look great and are a supply of bird food
- Adapt to most soil types
Use Meadowmat for Birds and Bees for low maintenance gardens, wildlife areas, orchards, parks, green roofs, raised beds
Maintenance is simple; allow Meadowmat for Birds and Bees to grow unchecked from early spring through to autumn and into the winter months. In late February/early march, cut down the seedheads and remove all dead vegetation. No need to add fertiliser, compost or topdressing. These plants like low nutrient soil.
